Walk east to west along Ferhadija and you cross from Ottoman Baščaršija, copper stalls, the call to prayer, coffee thick and slow, into Austro-Hungarian boulevards in a single block. Few cities wear their history so openly.
Sarajevo endured the longest siege in modern history (1992-1996) and carries it with quiet dignity: the Tunnel of Hope, the Roses cast into the pavement, and a population as warm and unbroken as anywhere on earth.
